TRYOUTS FOR 2008/09 PMSC TEAMS
All sessions at Edith McDermott Elementary School unless otherwise stated.
Mandatory Registration:
Before any player can tryout for a Pitt Meadows Soccer Club team, they must be registered with the club. Players must register using the club's on-line registration system prior to attending the tryouts. Please bring a copy of printed registration receipt to the tryouts either reflecting your payment or with a cheque made out to Pitt Meadows Soccer.
PMSC policy allows for a one-day grace period in the event that a player's parents are unable to register their child before tryouts begin. However, a child will not be permitted to continue in the second stage of the tryout process if he or she is not properly registered.
On-line registration can be completed overnight and brought to the tryouts the next day with a cheque or cash covering the appropriate registration fee.
Tryout Dates & Information:

A second date will be determined at this tryout
Over the course of 2-4 hours, usually over a weekend, players are put through a number of skill testing drills to determine if they have the ability to play on the team they are trying out for. These drills are designed to identify attributes such as the ability to shoot accurately and with sufficient power and the ability to dribble the ball with both feet. The skill testing drills will also allow the observers to judge a player's defensive abilities. Soccer skills are not the only measure used to assess a player's eligibility for a particular team. Being able to listen carefully and follow direction are also deciding factors. A child's fitness level can also be an indication of whether a player is equipped to play at the level they are trying out for.
Good players demonstrate a consistently high skill level, dedication, enthusiasm and an understanding of what is required to play at a high standard.
TEAM FORMATION
Please note: Pitt Meadows is not a large club compared to other soccer organizations in the lower mainland. Therefore, the club usually does not have the numbers required to enter teams at every level in each age group. For example, the club may or may not have the depth of talent to enter a Gold AND a Silver AND a Bronze team at U-13. It is generally the PMSC's policy when entering a team in a particular league to ensure that a team is capable of competing at the .500 level or above (i.e. should be strong enough to win 50% of its games).
Club Coaches:
Application forms to coach a team in the PMSC are available HERE. They are also made available at First Touch Soccer prior to the end of the current season. The PMSC deadline for coaching applications for the 2008/09 season is March 15th. If necessary, the PMSC Coach Selection Panel will interview prospective candidates for coaching positions and determine a suitable appointee through this process.
Evaluation Team:
While the head coach of each team is invited to observe the tryouts and offer input, the final decision on all selections is made by a GROUP of qualified and experienced coaches and/or executive members: (The Evaluation Team.) All of the members of the Evaluation Team (selectors) are chosen for their impartiality, their knowledge of the game and their experience.
Notification:
All players who attend PMSC tryouts will be notified via the web-site whether they have been chosen for the team they have tried out for, or whether they will be placed on another team after the completion of the tryouts. See the results by selecting Special Events from the left side column. You will be asked for your username and password.
All those players who are selected for a PMSC team will receive a subsequent telephone call from the team's Head Coach asking if the player wishes to accept a placement on the respective team. A player may choose not to accept a placement on the team when they are contacted (deciding instead to play on a team competing at a lower skill level so that they can play with their friends, for example). However, by accepting the coach's invitation to join the team, the player is committing to that team and agrees not to attend any other team's tryouts in the PMSC or any other club.
There is always a possibility that one or more of the players chosen to join a PMSC team after the tryouts have been conducted may decline the invitation. If this occurs, the team's Head Coach may choose to contact one of the players who may have already received notice that he or she did not make the team, to invite them to fill the opening(s).
Playing Up:
Current PMSC policies allow players to apply for permission to play in a higher age group. However, the club restricts players from playing more than one year above the division in which their birth date dictates they should be playing (i.e. a U-12 player can apply to play for a U-13 team, but not a U-14 team). Applications can be made up to and including March 15th each year, before the tryouts take place. Anyone trying out for an "older" age group team must be one of the starting (top 8 or 11) players identified at the tryouts, to be allowed to play up.
Letters of application can be e-mailed to the club president or head coach or can be mailed to the club's post office box number (P.O. Box 31504, Pitt Meadows, B.C. V3Y 2G7). Letters of application can also be dropped off at First Touch Soccer.
There is no standard form for this purpose. Applicants should simply write a letter explaining the reasons why the child should be allowed to move up.
Please Remember:
No system is perfect. All members of the evaluation teams are volunteers who attempt to make fair and unbiased assessments of all players!
Individual assessments of players are not made available after the tryouts. Time restrictions and the large number of evaluations that are conducted within the club do not allow for a thorough and comprehensive assessment of each individual player.
Financial Considerations:
If a player elects to join another team in another soccer club after he or she has tried-out for a Pitt Meadows team, or after the player has told the head coach that they are prepared to accept a position with a PMSC team for the coming season, a $50.00 tryout fee (penalty) will be deducted from any refund given to the said player, or the player's parents.
